Walkie-talkies and their frequencies - How can they be classified?

In the world of walkie-talkies, there are two main categories: licensed models and unlicensed ones. This classification refers to the frequencies used by the devices, and it’s crucial because each type serves different needs.

To choose the right model for your work environment and requirements, we recommend continuing to read to understand these frequencies:

Licensed walkie-talkies:

These models operate on regulated frequencies, meaning they require a licence to be used. They are divided into three types:

VHF VHF (Very High Frequency) : These walkie-talkies operate on a lower frequency (30-300 MHz), making them ideal for long-distance transmissions in open areas (mountains, rural zones, etc.). UHF UHF (Ultra High Frequency) : Thanks to their higher frequency (300 MHz - 3 GHz), these models are particularly effective in more crowded environments. Their signal penetrates walls better, making them perfect for indoor use and dense urban areas. Marine Band Marine Band: Operating between 156 and 174 MHz, these are specifically designed for marine environments. On boats, yachts, or other vessels, they ensure the crew stays in contact and safe, even in tough conditions.

Unlicensed walkie-talkies:

Unlicensed walkie-talkies:

Considered free to use within the European Union, these models operate on frequency bands from 446 to 446.200 MHz. Since no licence is required to use them, they’re perfect for personal use or small groups. Their range depends on the terrain and environment, but they are very practical for communication at outdoor/ indoors events.
