I knew it? The webcam family is divided into two groups: models without a microphone and models with a microphone! What sense does it have? Well, as we've already mentioned here , PC audio quality isn't always top-notch... But beware! Even if your PC's audio is poor quality, that doesn't mean a webcam with microphone is the ideal solution for you.
Do you feel lost? Let us explain: if you work in a quiet environment ( closed individual office, home, etc. ), this page is for you! On the other hand, if you work in an open-plan office or have children at home, we advise you to opt for headphones or a speaker ( we help you choose here ).
Do you have doubts about which webcam with microphone to choose? We have created this page to help you choose:
Before diving into the topic and exploring the different types of sound quality and the factors that influence them, we thought it would be a good idea to take a quick look at the 2 types of webcam, to understand ( once and for all ) how they should be used:
NO MICROPHONE
They are the very essence of webcams. Without audio capture function, they must be associated with an external audio device ( speaker, headphones, microphone, etc. )
Preferred environment: open and/or noisy environments
WITH MICROPHONE
This is the easy solution! Already equipped with a sound sensor, they manage video capture and sound capture during video conferences and calls.
Preferred environment: closed and/or quiet spaces
Surveys show that for virtual meeting participants, audio quality is 4 times more important than video quality. If you think about it, there's nothing more unpleasant than hearing "Can you hear me?" or "Can you repeat that?" over and over again during a meeting... So think about that when choosing your webcam...
There are 3 :
Microphone sensitivity: This is what affects the clarity and pickup of sounds near and far. In fact, microphones with higher sensitivity tend to perform better in quieter environments.
Noise cancellation: An influence factor does not have to mean a negative impact. The proof is in the noise cancellation module, available on some webcams, which improves audio quality by reducing unwanted background noise ( like mouse clicks or fans in the middle of summer ).
Design quality – makes sense! The quality of the materials and engineering used to manufacture the microphone, and more generally the webcam, affects its overall performance. We will not tire of repeating it: prioritize quality over quantity!
Don't know which audio tool to choose? Well, we've put together a comparison of speakers VS headphones to help you decide (it's right here ! )
Without further ado, we reveal the 5 most common sound quality grades and their properties:
Grade | Quality |
* | Low audio quality |
** | Standard audio quality |
*** |
Improved sound quality |
**** |
High audio quality |
***** |
Professional |
* Low audio quality: It is the basic range. Microphones in this category pick up sound, but their quality is often mediocre, with clarity and sensitivity that leaves something to be desired... In noisy environments, this level of sound should be avoided, or you risk a poor communication experience (not included). filter unwanted noise).
**Standard audio quality – a slight jump in quality! Although you can count on clearer sound here ( acceptable for basic video conferencing ), standard quality microphones still struggle to deliver an optimal audio experience in noisy environments or in demanding situations.
*** Improved sound quality – This is where noise suppression technologies come into play! Improved sensitivity, stereo sensors and passive reduction of unwanted ambient noise are the ingredients that allow microphones in this class to dramatically improve the quality of the sound they capture.
**** High Audio Quality – Microphones in this category are said to be high-end, meaning they are capable of picking up voices more clearly and sharply, for exceptional sound reproduction. A small plus: in this category, it is not uncommon to find advanced audio features ( such as echo cancellation ).
***** Professional: it is the crème de la crème! Professional audio quality involves the use of high-quality external microphones, especially in situations where maximum precision and clarity of sound is required. In addition, you can freely choose the microphones that best suit your needs.
