Choosing the right webcam: Chapter 1 - HD vs 4K resolution

When we want to buy a webcam, a screen, a smartphone or even a monitor, we always talk about the same thing: resolution. But what exactly is resolution? We understand that it has something to do with the image, but what exactly does it mean in detail?

Well, long story short, resolution (of a webcam, display, etc.) is literally the image quality that the product offers. To be more precise, it is measured in pixels wide by pixels high (the famous 1920x1080px that you see everywhere).

Now that we've clarified the concept of resolution, we can get to work! Definition, pros and cons: We go over Full HD and 4K resolutions in depth so you (really) understand how they are different.

Not so fast! Don't have time or simply don't feel like reading the entire comparison? We have thought of you and have put together all the essential information in a summary table that you can access right here:

Full HD vs 4K: The battle of resolutions!

Full HD resolution:

Yes, we already know that Full HD resolution is something like a revised version of traditional HD resolution. Full HD resolution refers to a pixel count of 1920 x 1080 (which is the resolution still found on many digital cameras), compared to 1280 x 720 for conventional HD.

The "Pros"

1 hour of video recording only takes up 8 GB of memory ( and that's not much, we assure you )
Much faster data transfer when sharing media files
Reduced costs
Low energy consumption

The "Cons"

The image is less sharp and unfortunately limited in terms of displaying details
When zooming in, the image quality has an unfortunate tendency to pixelate ( you know, blurry little squares )
On screens larger than 40", image sharpness seriously suffers

4K resolution:

In short, 4K resolution is the ultimate in image quality! Compared to Full HD, 4K is more than double! Increasingly present in new electronic and digital models, it is, in a way, the successor to Full HD. Also called Ultra HD ( UHD ), it corresponds to a much higher number of pixels of at least 3840 × 2160 ( which promises very detailed images ).

The "Pros"

More pixels means a sharper image, with very precise details
Image can be processed with zoom in
Perfect for screens of all sizes ( although the difference is really noticeable on screens larger than 40 inches )

The "Cons"

For 1 hour of video recording, about 22 GB of memory is required
Larger files, so longer data transfer times ( with a slight risk of overheating while recording )
Higher power consumption

Concepts to remember:

What video resolutions are available for webcams?

There are 3: The HD ( 1280 x 720 pixels ); the Full HD ( 1920 x 1080 pixels ) and the 4K/UHD ( 3840 x 2160 pixels ).

Full HD or 4K: Which is better?

If we are guided by image quality, 4K is the clear winner. If you look at power consumption, cost and weight, you will see that the results are more mixed ( in fact, it depends mostly on your network infrastructure and its needs ).

When is 4K worth it?

A 4K solution becomes really interesting on screens larger than 40 inches ( again, you will really see the difference in terms of detail and clarity ).

What resolution should I choose for my webcam?

Honestly, a 1080p webcam is adequate for most applications. But keep in mind that the more pixels you have, the more detailed the image will be. So, if you can afford it, go for a 4K webcam ( you will get a much better result in terms of video clarity and frame rate ).
